#HelpuNiHelpuChi by ordering and collecting repeat prescriptions in advance. If you have run out of prescribed medication, use our Accessing Medicines Guide. The researchers explored the characteristics of the disease, the medications people took and their likelihood of fracturing bones.
- These include weight gain, diabetes, stomach ulcers, osteoporosis, increase in blood pressure and a disturbed sleep pattern.
- The presence of inflammation alone won’t confirm the diagnosis of polymyalgia rheumatica.
- See a GP if you have pain and stiffness for more than a week.
- The condition can also make you feel low and anxious, and depressed.
- Generally, it presents as an autoimmune disease that is triggered by one of several stimuli in the environment.
We do not have access to information which will identify you. Finally, as we always say, if you have any concerns about your health, don’t suffer in silence. Speak to your GP or your local pharmacy for help and advice. You need to find the right balance between rest and activity.

This may occur after reduction of their steroid treatment for GCA or after steroids have been stopped completely. Most people with polymyalgia rheumatica will need a course of corticosteroid treatment that lasts for 18 months to 2 years to prevent their symptoms returning. Participants in this study took steroids for longer than anticipated. GPs should be encouraged to discuss the impact of long-term steroids.
Temporal arteritis is treated with steroid medicine, usually prednisolone. They may carry out further tests to help diagnose temporal arteritis. More general symptoms are also common – for example, flu-like symptoms, unintentional weight loss, depression and tiredness.
Polymyalgia Rheumatica (PMR)
In the meantime, the below exercise programme can provide a good starting point for this condition. These factors could increase the likelihood of someone developing polymyalgia rheumatica. It does not mean everyone with these risk factors will develop symptoms (1).

The NHS website has more information about polymyalgia rheumatica. Some people also experience hallucinations (seeing or pharmacyathomerx hearing things that aren’t there). Contact your GP as soon as possible if you experience changes to your mental state.
Oral preparations are often used as an adjunctive therapy to DMARDs (Disease Modifying Anti-Rheumatic Drugs). Intravenous preparations have a more restricted role in very ill patients. Steroids given directly into the joint (intra-articular), are commonly used for inflammatory rheumatic diseases eg. RA, psoriatic arthritis or juvenile arthritis and when given into an inflamed area (intra-lesional), can be helpful for example in bursitis.

The researchers asked people with polymyalgia rheumatica about their experience of the condition. As expected, they described pain and stiffness, fatigue and insomnia and an inability to carry out everyday tasks. In addition, people described stiffness that lasted all day, rather than just in the morning.

The research concludes that people with polymyalgia rheumatica would benefit from a falls assessment when first diagnosed, and regular treatment reviews. The longer you take corticosteroids, and the higher the dose, the greater your risk of side effects. Tell your doctor immediately if you come into contact with anyone suffering from shingles or chickenpox, as you may need urgent preventative treatment.
The condition usually affects joints on both sides of the body at the same time. This can cause pain and stiffness in the affected joints and surrounding muscles (2). There is no unique symptom of polymyalgia rheumatica and no unique blood test that confirms the diagnosis.
